I made this video for The Cubical’s new single Dirty Shame - an amazing Beefheart/Garage/Psych/Blues band who even Jan Molby loves, you can’t ask for more than that!!
Filmed at Dolphin Dance Studios in Liverpool it’s taken from the forthcoming download single. Get all the latest info and follow their adventures HERE!!
INSECT GUIDE - DARK DAYS & NIGHTS
Recorded on the dirty dancefloor of a Leeds club behind closed doors, during the first dance and at 2am just as the night was really getting started. This was the first single from the new Insect Guide album Dark Days & Nights described by The Guardian as: ”One of the best singles I’ve heard this year… Dark Days & Nights is the sound of barbed wire delivered with roses”. You can buy the new album from the amazing Squirrel Records HERE. Check out all things Insect Guide HERE
Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, Thrushes create beautifully crafted noise-pop alongside Phil Spector-esque dreamscapes. No song captures this more than the amazing ‘Heartbeats’ taken from their debut album ‘Sun Comes Undone’. I was lucky enough to get the chance to work on the track for their remix album. The new album ‘Night Falls’ is available now! Buy Thrushes music here
JONJO FEATHER - TAXI
Retreating into the underground clubs of Leeds I made this video in 2008 for the great Jonjo Feather single ‘Taxi’. Released on Dead Young Records, the song is scratchy, edgy, spooky-pop and the album that followed is just as fine! Check him out here
THE LUCID DREAM - IN YOUR EYES
This is my latest video made for ‘The Lucid Dream’ a great band from Carlise, Cumbria. The song ‘In Your Eyes’ is released on ‘360 Degree Music’ on 1st November and you should really go check them out! Rooted deeply in ’60s psychedelia the video was recorded in Leeds during a recording session at Ghost Town Studios. You can get all the latest info from 360 Degree Music
THE IVORIES - TONIGHT
In November 2005 I travelled down to London to film ‘The Ivories’ at the amazing Koko venue in Camden. This footage shows the empty venue at soundcheck and the atmosphere of the packed gig. It’s my favourite song they recorded - ‘Tonight’, a B-side from their debut single ‘Reduce The Temperature’.
THE MANHATTAN LOVE SUICIDES-SKULLS
Between 2006-2009 I made 8 videos for The MLS - They split leaving an amazing catalogue of fuzzed up, feedback drenched, ear-splitting noise-pop. This was one of my favourite tracks and videos, so simply capturing the hungover Sunday morning on which it was recorded. You can still buy their music from Squirrel Records
Kristin Hersh is the lead singer/songwriter of 4AD legends The Throwing Muses. As early as 2005 she made her music available to download free of charge with fans given the option to donate cash (nope it wasn’t Radiohead’s idea!). Now she’s developed the idea further with her project CASH Music. Rubidoux is originally from her download album SPEEDBATH released under a Creative Commons license - stems are made available to remix so I couldn’t resist having a go as ‘The Real Ramona’ was one of my favourite albums of the ’90s. Check out her website here
Insect Guide got interviewed by an ace website called ‘a negative narrative’. The answers come in pictures not words, and we created a panoramic cityscape answer in preparation of our forthcoming film. You can see the full Q&A image HERE
Be sure to check out the other bands on there too, loads of cool images and free music courtesy of anegativenarrative.com
THE CUBICAL - LIKE ME I’M A PEACOCK
In theory, I should really of been in bed on this cold Sunday morning in 2008… Instead I was up at 6am travelling to film The Cubical, an amazing band from Liverpool. If you like Beefheart-Garage-Psych-Blues then you should really check out their great debut album ‘Come Sing These Crippled Tunes’ recorded in LA and out now on Dead Young Records. Check ‘em out, go see them live (you wont regret it!) and buy their music! The Cubical on Facebook
Untitled1 (approx.1949) - ROBERT HOWELLS
Ok, I admit I have nothing to do with the taking of this picture but the artist is my Grandad - Robert Howells. In the late 1940’s he started learning the art of photography with the subjects being his workplace and family. I may be biased but I think the shots are beautiful and if I don’t show them to the world they’ll never be seen again!
On Easter Sunday March 2008, Insect Guide played in Philadelphia with the amazing NY band Soundpool. We stayed in touch and they were kind enough to let me remix my favourite track from their album ‘dichotomies + dreamland’. They make great music and are amazing people too - you can’t ask for more than that! Please go here, become their friend and buy their music! Soundpool on facebook
INSECT GUIDE - FROZEN
This was the first track from the Insect Guide debut album ‘6ft In Love’. A day walking on the Huddersfield moors with Harry and Floss, drowning Lauren’s toy dolls and letting them float down the frosty brook… not sure if she knows about that…
